Tigris of Gaul was an undefeated gladiator who is called out of retirement to duel Maximus together with tigres. Tigris was defeated by Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) who refused to obey Commodus's command to perform the coup de grace.

As a result, Maximus is pronounced "Maximus the Merciful" by Roman spectators.
